Diarrhea can be dangerous if children have lost a lot of fluids that have not been replaced quickly.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div><div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-4  el_after_av_one_full  el_before_av_one_full  column-top-margin\" style='border-radius:0px; '><p><div  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h2    avia-builder-el-5  el_before_av_textblock  avia-builder-el-first  '><h2 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >What tests can the doctor do?<\/h2><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div><br \/>\n<section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Diagnostic tests to find the causes of diarrhea include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Medical history and clinical examination<\/strong>. The doctor needs to know about your eating habits and possible medication use to examine you for symptoms of the disease.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stool culture<\/strong>. Microbiologists analyze a stool sample in the lab to check for bacteria, parasites or other signs of disease or infection.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Blood tests<\/strong>. Blood tests may be useful to rule out certain diseases.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nutritional tests<\/strong>. To find out if a food intolerance or allergy is causing diarrhea. The doctor may ask you to avoid lactose, found in dairy products, carbohydrates, wheat or other foods to see if the diarrhea responds to a change in diet.<\/li>\n<li><strong>igmoidoscopy<\/strong>. For this test, the doctor uses a special instrument to examine the inside of the rectum and the lower part of the colon.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Colonoscopy<\/strong>. This test is similar to sigmoidoscopy, but the doctor looks at the entire colon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/section><\/p><\/div><div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-7  el_after_av_one_full  el_before_av_hr  column-top-margin\" style='border-radius:0px; '><p><div  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h3    avia-builder-el-8  el_before_av_textblock  avia-builder-el-first  '><h3 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >Is there an effective treatment for diarrhea?<\/h3><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div><br \/>\n<section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p>In most cases, the only treatment necessary is to replace fluids that have been lost to prevent dehydration. Drugs that stop diarrhea may be helpful in some cases, but are not recommended for people whose diarrhea is from a bacterial infection or parasite, because by stopping diarrhea the microorganism gets trapped in the intestines and we get a prolongation of the problem. Instead, doctors usually prescribe antibiotics.
