Although there is no clear definition of constipation, the retention of stool and its delayed elimination results in the formation of stools that are hard in consistency and large in size. The expulsion of these stools is usually painful and can cause injury to the anus, small tears along the anus, and the appearance of bright red blood along with the stool. Also from excessive straining of the child during defecation can cause small thromboses in the external hemorrhoidal plexus that appear as painful nodules at the entrance of the anus.<\/p>\n<p>Both cases are painful for the child, resulting in further postponement of defecation and worsening of constipation.
